Removing an app download can make joining easier. It does not remove every obstacle. A customer may not use a supported wallet, may have limited connectivity or may simply prefer help from the person at the till.
World Wide Worx's September 2026 research release distinguishes internet access from online shopping participation. That research is not a wallet-usage study, but it is a useful warning against treating digital customers as one identical group. [S08]
Before replacing your paper cards, spend seven trading days watching how your own customers join.
Test the whole journey
Begin with staff phones and a small group of willing customers. Check the QR code, the joining page, the explanation of reward terms, wallet installation, first qualifying transaction and redemption. Include different supported devices rather than showing the owner a single polished demonstration.
Watch what happens when reception is poor, someone closes the joining page halfway through or a customer changes phones. Ask your provider to demonstrate the supported recovery process. A card being visible on a phone does not establish that earning and redemption will work without connectivity.
Keep the till queue moving. Offer help away from the busiest checkout point where practical, and use a short explanation: “You can save our rewards card on your phone. Would you like to see how it works?” Do not bundle an unclear marketing agreement into the pitch.
Count the steps that matter
A hypothetical Umhlanga shop invites 100 customers. Seventy start, 55 finish adding a card and 40 record a qualifying use. Reporting 70 new members would hide a large gap between interest and use.
Record invitations, completed joins, first use and later return separately. Note why people stop. The answer might be a confusing reward, a device issue, a long form or an explanation staff have not practised.
With a seven-day pilot, many people will not yet have had a natural opportunity to return. Use it to improve onboarding, then follow the cohort for a buying cycle appropriate to your business.
Make the alternative fair
Decide how to help customers who cannot complete the digital journey. An assisted process or temporary paper arrangement may be possible, but it needs clear rules, secure handling and protection against duplicate rewards. Confirm what your provider supports instead of inventing a workaround at each branch.
Avoid collecting extra identity details merely because a form allows them. Explain what information is needed and what the customer can choose.
Futhi advertises wallet cards, QR joining and staff scanning on everyday devices. [F02] Ask for a demonstration with your team's phones and a real redemption scenario. A successful pilot ends with staff who can explain the programme and customers who can actually use it. That is a better launch statistic than a QR code printed 500 times.
