Black Friday can introduce your business to customers who would never have found you at full price. The challenge is giving them a reason to return once the promotion has ended.
In 2026, Black Friday falls on 27 November. Start the return plan while you are planning the sale, rather than trying to reconstruct it from a till report in December. [S14]
Stats SA's March 2026 analysis found November accounted for 45.9% of combined November and December retail sales in 2025. The analysis describes a seasonal shift; it does not measure the precise sales caused by Black Friday promotions. [S12]
Give the first offer a financial limit
Calculate contribution after the advertised discount, expected returns, fulfilment and payment costs. Decide how much of that contribution can fund the next visit. A large first-order discount plus a generous comeback reward may leave neither purchase doing useful work.
Consider a hypothetical independent retailer offering R40 towards a later qualifying basket of at least R300. If that basket contributes R90 before the reward, it contributes R50 after the R40 incentive, before other campaign costs. The threshold is only sensible if customers value the basket and the margin assumption is realistic.
Check whether the reward could apply to an already discounted or low-margin item. Write exclusions clearly and make the till rules match the message.
Make the next visit specific
Agree when the reward becomes usable, where it works and what a customer needs to do. Use a reasonable, clear validity period and get advice on the applicable rules for promotional vouchers. Do not confuse a promotional incentive with purchased stored value.
Offer customers a straightforward way to join the loyalty programme, with separate clarity about marketing permission. A receipt email collected to deliver an online order is not automatically a green light for every promotional channel.
The next message should be relevant to the purchase: a replenishment opportunity, a complementary product or a suitable return service. Avoid sending a generic discount to people who have already completed the next purchase.
Keep following the cohort
Measure first-time buyers separately from existing regulars. Track net first-order contribution, second-purchase rate, second-order contribution and refunds. Remove cancelled transactions from the reward calculation according to your published terms and supported process.
Use a comparison group where practical. Some seasonal customers would have returned without the extra incentive, and some may simply shift a January purchase into December. Keep observing for long enough to see that difference.

Ask Futhi to map the follow-up before you publish the sale creative. A great Black Friday result is more useful when December and January have something to show for it too.
